Ownership – as an example of Leadership

“I am clueless, I need help” – Efficient boss

In this post I am probably diverging from the main topic of my blog; ‘How to be your own boss’. From last couple of days I was thinking, is there difference between a boss and a leader, and here I am putting all the thoughts which went through my mind while thinking on this.

My brother and Some of my friends work for world’s best technology companies and then I have friends in my college doing graduation with me. Now there is one common difference between my friends doing graduation and my friends working in technology companies that lead me to write this particular article. Most of my friends; including me want to be a boss but surprisingly most of my friends working for technology companies want to become leaders; no one stated this but I did fell this.

I was very confused how to explain the differences and what types of examples I should give, so simply lets proceed and see where this discussion ends.

Everything in this world is make up of building blocks, you can have many building blocks but in final you have one structure. Structure defines the final behavior but building blocks define everything else; say success and failure of the structure which also means that each building block have responsibility towards every aspect of the structure.

So where in all this fits Leaders and Bosses?

What I learnt from my friends in technology domain is that they ask for help, then they learn and they teach; all while being leaders. There definition of Leader is someone who takes responsibilities; not necessary make decisions like a Boss. For them a Boss needs leaders to make correct decision, if a boss only have people working under him/her that’s not going to see success. This really took me off guard, I never thought about this, yes I know boss needs people to make decision but should they be leaders; now I think yes.
So who are leaders, I suppose people who take responsibilities and actually deliver are leaders; please share your though on this. One of my friend talk about Leaders as being Low maintenance people, I am not able to understand fully what he want to say but I will defiantly work on this Low maintenance and High maintenance way of doing work.
Below are some examples of leader which I learnt:
-          I am clueless, I need help - They are open to their inability and ready to learn from anyone.
-          I don’t know what’s going on – They never think what would other’s think about them.
And below are some examples of people who do not qualify as leaders:
-          Its not my fault – busier in playing blame game.
-          Withholding bad news – they fears a lot from failure.

So guys above really made me think a lot, I want to be leader or I want to be boss. I talked with my friends about how they work and that is why I am able to find a difference in a Leader and a Boss. I am not closing this article with just above writing, above is more of an introduction to a wider range of discussion. Well what I learnt is that we must be first successful leaders before becoming successful bosses?

Entrepreneurship "Facts"

Stories related to entrepreneurship sounds amazing when someone sum up his or her life in hours but the way to a successful entrepreneur is not that easy we can simply say its about a way of life where you invest for successful career in a creative way which everyone can not see and everyone can not pursue.

It happens when someone thinks that being a simple commerce graduate is more valuable than being a MBA from Indian institute of management, well the person is Sanjeev bikhchandani founder of Naukri.com one of the best job search engine in India. but their is times when Mr Sanjeev borrowed money even from his wife to continue the business which was in the black depth of failure.

It happens when a pursuing graduate leaves his studies for an offer of job from General Motors and comes up with a product like Blackberry later, born in Istanbul comes up to windser in 1980 with his parent's, Mihal (Michael) Lazaridis is one of the Influential canadian personality in world.

It happens when an unsuccessful businessman makes an another attempt to run his business like anything by joining Hockey celebrities name with his store and who know's the store will be a successful business with 3600 location's, the person is Mr Jim charade, who died recently in 2009. Despite of he remains unrecognised for his idea but Mr charade is happy because his Idea is alive forever.

I end up this post with a message of swami vivekanand
"Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life - think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success, that is way great spiritual giants are produced."

'Stay hungry stay foolish' Steve Jobs

In my second post I am introducing a successful entrepreneur. His story gives us a simple message that no doubt he  also have his bad times in business but only thing he never lost is hope, only thing he never changed is focus and the only thing he never leave is his positive attitude towards life and career, and which today introduce him to the world as successful individual and of course unique in personality and experience.

Steve jobs. he is the CEO of apple, which he co-founded in 1976, today leading the consumer technology world with it's revolutionary product's. steve also co-founded and was the CEO of pixar animation, which created some most successful animated films including Toy story and Bug's life but their is a person behind this success who start's his career as a college drop out because it was expensive, recalling his time he said, I normally slept on the floor in friends' rooms, returned coke bottles for 5 cents deposits to buy food with, and walk 7 miles every sunday night to hare krishna temple for a good meal.

At 20 he and his friend (Steve woznaik) started a company in a garage on April 1, 1976. They named their company Apple in memory of a happy summer he spent as an orchard worker in oregon. They faced competition from IBM's new PC and unveiled their new creation, Lisa only to be another expensive failure, after this failure they worked on Macintosh, by 1986 Mac was a huge success and apple had grown into a $ 2 Billion dollar company with over 2000 employees.

However later, he left the company after losing a bitter battle over control with apple CEO John sculley, Well according to Jobs getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. And this is the only quality entrepreneur should have to start from the beginning at any time. During the next five years he started two new companies Nextstep and Pixar, Next didn't do well whereas Pixar was a success story and jobs become an instant billionaire.

Meanwhile, his old company , Apple was in immense pressure from rival Microsoft and in 1996 posted billions of dollers in losses. In Dec 1996 jobs convinced Apple to buy NeXT and make its software the foundation of the next generation Mac OS and everything else is history, Initially appointed as Apple's adviser, Steve jobs was named Apple's interim CEO in 1997.

In 2004, jobs was diagnosed with Cancer on his pancreas. jobs was told that the cancer was incurable and he would only live for another three to six months. Later a biospy showed that he had very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgry. He had the surgery and survived.

He believes in "Stay hungry and stay foolish" which sound's insane but staying hungry and staying foolish makes him so valuable. I like to share a Video with you of this great man.
